This is overload injury of humerus medial epicondyle. This kind of condition occurs in young athletes such disciplines like baseball or handball (especially pitchers), where we indicate an overhand throw. The valgus elbow causes tension on the elbow’s medial soft tissues such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), medial epicondyle or ulnar nerve and the compression of the lateral side. It can lead to avulsion (tearing away) of the growth plate off the humerus medial epicondyle. The growth plate only occurs in young people, where the bone growth runs still on, that’s why this type of injury doesn’t occur in elderly athletes.
Exercises
1) Active range of motion flexion and extension:
– sit on the chair and bend your elbow to 90 degrees
– bend your wrist and extend it
– practise exercise 15 times
2) Wrist stretching:
– when you’re sitting straighten your arms
– bend your wrist with the another hand support and hold position for 5 seconds
– then extend the wrist with another hand and hold it for 5 seconds
– repeat each activity 10 times
3) Pronation and supination of the forearm:
– bend your elbow to 90 degrees
– rotate your forward (to see dorsal and palm surface of your hand)
– repeat each side 15 times
4) Eccentric wrist flexion:
– bend your elbow to 90 degrees
– grip some object with adequate weight (e.g. small bottle of water)
– bend your wrist with the other hand support and get back slowly
– practise exercise 15 times
5) Eccentric wrist extension:
– now invert your forearm
– grip some object with adequate weight (e.g. small bottle of water)
– raise your hand with the other hand support and get back slowly
– practice exercise 15 times
6) Resisted elbow flexion and extension:
– stand up relaxed, take some object to hand
– bend your elbow and get back slowly
– repeat exercise 15 times
