Thumb sprain: the thumb, especially the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), is vulnerable to sprains. It’s caused by its localization (between base of the thumb and second digit) and abilities, because it stabilizes the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP). The injury’s mechanism is connected with falling onto the hand (e.g. baseball) or with contact with another athlete (e.g. rugby). Thumb dislocation (skier’s thumb): It is based on temporary or permanent an abnormal separation in the joint. It can be connected with soft tissue damage (joint capsule, ligaments). The thumb can be dislocated when is torqued or hyperextended and the external force pushes on it. This kind of injures happen in contact sports, but also we can meet it often in a ski slope and that’s why it is called “Skier’s Thumb” . When you dislocate your thumb once, it’s very possible to do it over and over again, so you should remember about our prophylactic brace! Thumb fracture: it is the result of the above injures, but the external force was so huge and caused fracture of the phalanx of the thumb. The healing period is much longer. ALL OF THE ABOVE INURES CAN OCCURE INDEPENDENTLY OR TOGETHER.
